Plum Slate Gravel Driveway Boundary Installation in Dartford

This project involved the full transformation of a tired and unused driveway edge into a clean, low-maintenance and visually striking boundary using plum slate gravel in Dartford. The aim was to improve both the appearance and functionality of the space, while also introducing effective drainage along the driveway edge.

Project Details

Excavation & Ground Preparation

The project began with the full excavation of the existing verge alongside the driveway. All loose materials, soil and debris were removed to create a solid foundation for the new installation.

Once excavated, the area was carefully levelled and shaped to ensure correct falls for drainage. A high-quality sub-base (MOT Type 1) was then installed and compacted using professional equipment to create a stable base layer. Proper preparation at this stage is essential to prevent sinking, movement and long-term issues.

Edging & Drainage Installation

To define the boundary and retain the new surface, strong block edging was installed along both sides of the strip. These kerb-style blocks provide a clean, structured finish while keeping the gravel securely in place.

A key part of this project was the installation of a linear drainage channel (ACO drain) along the edge of the driveway. This ensures that rainwater is effectively collected and directed away, preventing water build-up and protecting both the driveway and surrounding areas.

Gravel & Decorative Finish

With the groundwork complete, a weed control membrane was installed to minimise future maintenance and prevent unwanted growth.

The area was then finished with high-quality plum slate chippings, creating a striking contrast against the existing block paving and edging. This rich burgundy tone adds depth and a modern aesthetic, enhancing the overall kerb appeal of the property.

The finished result is not only visually appealing but also highly practical, offering excellent drainage and a low-maintenance solution for the homeowner.
