Grey Block Paved Driveway in Darenth

We completed this substantial grey block paved driveway transformation in Darenth, replacing the property’s old and uneven frontage with a completely redesigned driveway featuring new retaining brickwork, drainage, steps and decorative paving.

The original frontage consisted of a mixture of old hardstanding, pathways and planted areas. Due to the property’s sloping position, the project required more than simply laying new paving. Careful groundwork and changes in level were needed to create a practical driveway while providing safe access down to the house.

Project Details

Excavation & Ground Preparation

Work began by breaking out and removing the existing surfaces across the front of the property. The photographs show the area being excavated extensively, exposing the existing ground and allowing the new driveway levels to be established.

Concrete foundations were formed where required for the new structural brickwork. The main driveway area was then built back up with a substantial aggregate sub-base, which was spread and compacted to provide a strong foundation for the new paving.

New Retaining Brick Walls

Because of the difference in height between the road and the entrance to the property, new red brick retaining walls were constructed as part of the installation.

These walls separate the raised driveway from the lower pedestrian access alongside the house. Red brick was chosen to complement the existing property, with brick-on-edge coping providing a smart finish along the top.

This element gives the completed driveway a much more structured appearance while dealing effectively with the property’s existing levels.

New Steps & Lower Pathway

A new set of steps was constructed to provide access between the upper driveway and lower level of the property.

The steps feature traditional red brick risers combined with large grey paving slabs for the treads. The result ties the modern grey driveway into the more traditional brickwork used elsewhere in the project.

A separate block paved pathway was also installed at the lower level alongside the house.

Drainage Installation

Drainage was incorporated into the design, particularly along the lower section beside the retaining wall.

A linear drainage channel was installed to collect surface water and help manage runoff from the surrounding paved areas. This was particularly important given the different levels across the frontage.

Grey Block Paved Driveway with Bespoke Detailing

The main driveway was finished predominantly in dark grey block paving, creating a smart contemporary appearance.

Rather than using a single colour throughout, contrasting lighter blocks were incorporated to create a double perimeter border. A particularly striking feature is the bespoke geometric design positioned centrally within the driveway, using the same contrasting blocks to create a unique focal point.

The combination of dark grey paving and lighter detailing gives the large driveway plenty of definition without making the overall design overly complicated.

The Finished Driveway

The finished transformation has dramatically changed the front of this Darenth property.

What was previously a fragmented and dated frontage is now a large, clearly defined and attractive driveway with considerably improved access and usable parking space.

The combination of grey block paving, contrasting borders, bespoke paving details, new retaining walls, drainage, steps and lower pathway demonstrates how a challenging sloping frontage can be completely redesigned into a practical and attractive entrance to a home.
